Art Scholarships
"Starving Artist" is a cliche for a good reason. America does many things very well, but it's only so-so at supporting the arts. Somehow, the concept of art is associated with prissiness and feminism to most white guys, who look at a museum or performing arts center and ask why there isn't a football stadium there. In the closest thing which America has to a recognized artistic community, Hollywood, I believe it is still an arrestable offense to say "art" within it's city limits. Art gets in the way of recycling last decade's TV series and this decade's video games into DVD-release movies. Disney struggles through, but only by stamping logos and trademarks on every flat surface so that consumers don't find the concept too intimidating.
Otherwise, Joe Sixpack will just look up from his FOX news and say, "Art? How are we going to fight terrorists with that?", he says, "What do we need to fund art scholarships for?" It is daunting to establish a significant culture amidst such cynicism.
In the middle of all this, students wishing to pursue an artistic career have to find art scholarships. This is something of an Easter-egg hunt. Nearly every higher-learning institute makes some gesture towards artistic achievement, but no specific central organization exists. Many clubs and special-interest groups also fund an art scholarship program; and it helps if you can attach significance to your proposed field by associating it with your racial or religious heritage. Saying you want to create tapestries doesn't get much more than an "mh-hm" and a return to the newspaper. Say you are a native American Indian who wants to create tapestries which illustrate and preserve your cultural heritage and all of a sudden you have professors and teachers clamoring to host you.
Art scholarships funding for a particular art form is often handled by the guild of artists themselves. A writer's guild may contribute some funding from dues to scholarships or grants, or a local community college theater group will have a work-your-way-through program. Thus, the art community tends to look after it's own through a system more resembling apprenticeships than anything else.
There is government funding of art scholarships programs, but they are small and besieged. Every time a government art scholarship program gets rolling, one of it's students does something smart-alecky like photograph a crucifix in a glass of pee and make sure it gets into the media. Within hours, bands of outraged moral citizens circle the building where the artistic grant was created, with picket signs and bullhorns shouting for blood. Approving arts funding in a big way has proved one of the fastest ways to get out of politics.
Private organizations are less afraid of commitment. Many corporations support arts funding or offer branded art scholarship and grant programs. Also, many art scholarships still survive as a legacy to artists in that field who were successful enough to leave an endowment for future generations. Check within your field and keep searching; you'll find a home for your muse eventually.
