Aviation Scholarships
So, you want to be a pilot! Putting the Pink Floyd song "Learning to Fly" on our mental iPod, we can examine what your ultimate goal shall be: completing a course of instruction until you are rewarded by that rite of passage of all pilots, your first solo flight. When that happens, the plane will climb twice as fast because, duh, no instructor with you! The circuit will take half the time, because a lighter plane flies faster. The silence will be deafening, because you've gotten used to having the instructor yammering in your ear the whole time. And the plane will feel like it doesn't want to land, because being lighter it will land softer. And then you will climb out and be presented with a spiff little certificate commemorating this milestone, plus picture of you and your plane.
But first, you have to get your head out of the clouds and start at step one: finding a source of aviation scholarships. Aviation scholarships commonly come in the form of a training program at a flight school for which you can apply through showing financial need. The program in this case typically lasts 2 years, from that first solo flight to being certified by the FAA. Students enrolling in a flight school receive support from ground instructors, flight instructors board members, aviation mentors, and former students who are now pilots.
Other aviation scholarships are provided by Air Force ROTC programs. These work like typical ROTC scholarships, available to high school and college students and enlisted members. They typically pay for tuition, books and fees, and some living expense stipend. Of course, military flight training will be quite different from civilian flight training. But you really wanted to fly a fighter jet anyway, didn't you?
The rest of the aviation scholarships are coming from private or commercial organizations, such as the National Air Transportation Foundation, the Institute of Aviation, the University Aviation Association, and Women in Aviation International. These organizations vary in scope and goals, some favoring minorities or disadvantaged applicants, others being merit-based.
The rules of pursuing aviation scholarships are similar to winning other scholarship awards. Most will ask for a 500-word essay on your goals and career aspirations, which is just the kind of thing to write up over winter break. The basic essay can then be modified to fit the individual organizations you will be applying with.
It will often it will take four to five months from the time of your scholarship inquiry until you hear the results of the aviation scholarships search.
Follow-up with the scholarships to be sure they received your application, and don't hesitate to contact them regarding their decisions if a reasonable amount of time has passed.
