The Bill Gates Scholarships There is one thing about Bill Gates that no one can ever take away: he is the most controversial figure the technology world has ever known. People love, hate, worship, condemn, adore, and scorn him. However, we can take a more objective view by separating the man from his job. Microsoft corporation has an obligation to it's stock-holders to make money, and you never hear a Microsoft stock-holder complain on that note, despite the company's infamy for questionable tactics in attaining that goal. But that is his job. Bill Gates, the person, has made a name for himself in charitable contributions to society. Even the staunchest enemies of the Redmond Kingdom have to admit that credit is due here. For starters, the Gates Cambridge Scholarships wade in with a hefty $210 million budget. These started in the year 2000 to enable quality graduate students from outside of the United Kingdom to study at the University of Cambridge. Those so awarded are given funding for postgraduate study at the University of Cambridge in England for at least one year, but with a limit at four years. This scholarship not only covers all tuition costs, but gives a maintenance allowance and even a discretionary spending allowance of pocket money for whatever else comes up. Students began benefiting from this program in 2001. Follow that up with the Gates Millennium Scholars program, which is funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It was established in 1999 to provide assistance to outstanding students from low-income backgrounds of African American, American Indian Natives, Asian Pacific Islander, and Hispanic American origin. Continuing scholars may request funding for a graduate degree program in one of several areas, including education, engineering, library science, mathematics, public health or science. The Gates Millennium Scholars program is very similar to many scholarship programs dedicated to aiding minorities, and in fact works hand in hand with the United Negro College Fund. An interesting new program is the Gates Public Service Law Scholarship. In this aid program, the legal education of just five candidates per year are funded, completely covering their total cost of attending the University of Washington School of Law. In exchange, these students are then obligated to commit to working seven years in public legal service after graduation. For example, as a legal aid, for an advocacy agency, as a nonprofit, or as a public defender or prosecutor. The idea here is to encourage young lawyers to pursue public-service careers. There is a great need for this encouragement, as by the time promising law students reach the end of their training, big law firms are offering them top dollar for commercial work. The formidable cost of law school makes these offers not only attractive, but essential in some cases to break even. Bill Gates created this program to honor his father, who is a lawyer by trade and former alumni of the University of Washington School of Law. Daddy Gates has also taken an active role in the family charity business. In June of 2001, William H. Gates Sr., acting as Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation co-chair, announced the creation of the Washington State Achievers program. It works with high schools serving large, low-income populations such as inner-city schools. At this writing, the Achievers program has redesigned 16 partner schools statewide and awarded 2,500 scholarships to low-income students. The controversy around Bill Gates and his world-spanning Microsoft empire may never stop, but you have to admit that the world's richest software mogul is also the founder of the largest charity ever known. Perhaps one goes with the other. And the foundation's choices, contrary to what critics would say, are obviously anything but self-serving. Somewhere in between the various causes that are championed by Bill and Melinda Gates, you get the feeling that maybe the guy has some best interests at heart, after all.
