The Bright Futures Scholarship Program
Various states have initiated their own lottery with the idea of funding public programs. Some states hold to that initiative better than others. In California, the wishy-washy idea of funneling the funds into public school programs kind of got lost by the wayside. In the Midwest, stanch prairie dwellers with their Methodist religious values chill most attempts to connect lotteries with children's education, so the funds are more likely to go towards road improvement or public building projects. But it was the state of Florida which was creative enough to create a scholarship program. By awarding the proceeds of the state's lottery to academically accelerated students, they ensure that what is done with the lottery funds is visible to the public and that demand will sustain the program.
And thus is born the Bright Futures Scholarship program. First started in 1997, the program allows Florida high school seniors the chance to earn a scholarship to any public college of their choice in the state. The scholarship does not apply if the student chooses a college outside of Florida. The program is the largest merit-based scholarship program and actually consists of three award levels. These are the Florida Academic Scholars Award, Florida Medallion Scholars Award, and Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars Award. Each of these have different criteria to meet in order to qualify for them.
The Gold Seal Vocational Scholars Award pays for 75% of tuition costs. It's requirements are a qualifying score of 440 on both Critical Reading and Math, a weighted grade point average of at least 3.0, and a weighted grade point average of a 3.5 in a three credit vocational program.
The Florida Medallion Scholars Award also pays for 75% of tuition costs. It requires either an SAT score of 970 or an ACT score of 20, plus a weighted grade point average of at least 3.0, besides other various requirements.
The Florida Academic Scholars Award offers full tuition reimbursement. To meet it, you have to get a qualifying SAT score of 1270 or ACT score of 28, a weighted grade point average of at least 3.5, and the additional condition of seventy-five community service hours. This award is actually a very good deal; for the price of working a little higher test score and filling in two weeks of volunteer work, you can get 100% tuition coverage.
You do have to qualify for financial aid in the first place. This is a matter of filling out a Florida financial aid application and meeting the requirements on or before your high school graduation date. In addition to the rest of the awards, the top-ranked scholar from each county receives an additional award of up to $1,500.
