Cerebral Palsy Scholarships
Cerebral palsy is a catch-all condition as far as symptoms are concerned. Various centers of the brain can be affected, producing symptoms anywhere from paralysis to impaired motor skills to seizures. The disease is both non-progressive as well as non-curable, but throughout the course of life the body may have some capacity to repair itself. The amazing thing is that individuals with this disease may go on to lead productive lives in some capacity. Indeed, some afflicted with cerebral palsy have even made famous marks on the world; amongst them painter and author Christy Brown, open-source developer Bruce Perens, comedian Josh Blue, and signer of the Declaration of Independence Stephen Hopkins. With cerebral palsy scholarships, those modern-day patients may also be able to make their mark.
Cerebral palsy scholarships are being made available for children with cerebral palsy. These can be used for attending colleges, camps, schools, and other programs. Finding cerebral palsy scholarships can be as simple as contacting the camp or college your child would like to attend. Special needs facilities can be costly, and these cerebral policy scholarships are needed to offset the prohibitive expenses.
Providers of valuable information, referrals, and even cerebral palsy scholarships themselves can include your local county mental health or family services office, religious organizations, and local charities such as Easter Seals, United Way, YMCA/YWCA, United Cerebral Palsy, and Lions and Elks Clubs. The New Jersey Elks are one such example, offering 700 to 800 camp-based cerebral palsy scholarships each summer through local lodges, to individuals age 7-18 with disabilities.
Other avenues to obtaining cerebral palsy scholarships include contacting local civic organizations, church charities, or your local vocational rehabilitation office. Be sure to ask about cerebral palsy scholarships when contacting the office for students with disabilities or the school’s financial aid department at the universities/colleges where you are applying or are already accepted.
The best place to start for your child in leading to a cerebral palsy scholarship may be in grade school. Many schools have special programs already in place. A tour of the facilities for schools and camps tending to neurological patients is an experience in itself, as you see the staff and equipment that is often creative an ingenious in accommodating the needs of their students. If your child has a school record of attending classes for children with special needs, he or she may already be qualified for a cerebral palsy scholarship. Also, these kinds of awards, unlike other scholarships, are usually awarded regardless of financial need in most cases.
