With the popularity of reality shows such as “Pimp My Ride” and “Ride with Funkmaster Flex” and movies such as “The Fast and the Furious,” people are fascinated by car culture. But even as interest increases, it seems that there are still not enough qualified automotive technicians to help keep America’s cars on the road. According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics, auto dealerships employ 265,000 technicians, but still need to add an additional 35,000 technicians annually through the year 2010; that number will be just to fill the barest need, not counting auto detailers or racing pit crews. For the high school senior who spends their weekend wrenching on their dream ride, it may seem too good to be true that their hobby might make them someone with a skill set that's in urgent demand. And yet there are a number of organizations out there that are aggressively pursuing today's backyard grease monkey with offers of college scholarships for auto enthusiasts, hoping to make him tomorrow's professional automotive engineer. The Society of Automotive Engineers has more than 90,000 members, and not all of them are in oil-stained blue jumpsuits. They are engineers, business executives, educators, and college students from more than 97 countries - who share information and exchange ideas for advancing the engineering of mobility systems. "Mobility systems" including "cars", mostly, for us plain folk. The SAE is devoted to the expertise used in designing, building, maintaining, and operating self-propelled vehicles for use on land or sea, in air or space. Then there are all-out contests, such as the annual Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills Competition. In this event, teams of students race to diagnose and repair a Ford Taurus, with a prize of $5 million in college scholarships for auto enthusiasts to use between them. Many graduates of a degree earned with college scholarships for auto enthusiasts go on to become technicians at dealerships and some progress to management positions. Those with two-year degrees will be able to earn a starting salary of $38,000 annually, with salary growth up to $100,000 or more for master technicians. With industry reports reflecting a shortage of 32,000 service techs annually, there is no reason for every automotive enthusiast with a knack for engineering not to take advantage of the college opportunities offered.
