Fulbright Scholarships
The global marketplace has arrived. Gone are the days when you only had to compete with five other practitioners of your trade in your small home town. Today's market introduces the idea that members of your team may not share your national borders, much less your language. While lower-level workers may complain about having to compete with the whole world at once for work, the scientific, medical, and humanity community consider it a great boon; global communications enable the participation and cooperation of many different sectors to work together. Skills are no longer to be hoarded, but shared.
While this vision is new to many, one person looked forward and saw the need for nations to pool the resources of it's collective best and brightest way back in 1948. That was J. William Fulbright, a United States Senator from Arkansas, who supported the creation of the United Nations and established an international exchange program, which thereafter bore his name, the Fulbright Fellowships. You could say he got some good mileage out of his political science degree, and also his law degree, which landed him a position as an attorney in the anti-trust division of the US Department of Justice. Considering that anti-trust law concerns itself with breaking down monopolies and establishing a level playing-field for competition and innovation, you may consider him the first champion of the idea that "Information wants to be free."
A Fulbright Scholarship is considered one of the most prestigious award programs and it operates in 144 countries, administered through 51 binational Fulbright commissions, US Embassies, and cooperating organizations. It is funded by Congressional appropriations and funding provided by partner governments. The Fulbright Scholarship program also receives important financial support from the world's academic institutions, foundations, and the private sector.
So, what do you have to do to get one? Well, Fulbright Scholarship Awards usually have no requirement of financial need; and that's the only easy thing about them! The typical application criteria is strenuous. Few successful candidates have a GPA of less than 3.8. You must state clear reasons why your research would be better served in the chosen destination country. You have to be an active participant in sports, the arts, student politics or voluntary organizations. They want people who seek out opportunities to get involved in social and cultural opportunities in such a way that they make that extra effort to interact as a positive force with the society where they reside.
The US-to-UK Fulbright Award Commission receives between 650-700 applications for the postgraduate awards each year, making it the most competitive Fulbright scholarship award in the world. About 850 grants are awarded to U.S. citizens annually through all of the programs, who are faculty or professionals to teach or conduct research in many countries. Grants last from 2 to 10 months. About 75% are lecturing or lecturing and research grants. About 25% are pure research grants. Due to proportionally keener competition, Fulbright scholarship grants to some countries such as in the United Kingdom, France, Australia, are more difficult to win.
