Georgia Hope Scholarship
Founded in 1993, the Georgia Hope Scholarship has been received by greater than nine-hundred-thousand students within the state of Georgia. The Scholarship, which has provided in excess of three billion dollars since its inception to high school graduates, goes towards students that plan to attend any of the technical colleges, universities, or colleges with in Georgia.
The Georgia Hope Scholarship is based on the principles of HOPE (Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally. In order to be eligible for this scholarship, Georgia students must meet a variety of requirements at the academic standpoint. The students must have at a minimum of 16 units (or credits), a minimum of a 3.0 GPA, and be looking to the college preparatory diploma to be eligible for the Georgia Hope Scholarship. For those looking to the technical and career diploma, they must possess a minimum of 13 units, a minimum of a 3.2 GPA, to be eligible for the scholarship. Beginning in the year 2007, honors and special courses will not be considered as weight in the application for the Georgia Hope Scholarship.
For students to be eligible for the scholarship they must have the minimum units in relation to what are determined to be core classes or core curriculum. In other words, for the college preparatory diploma, the student must have four units in each core class of Language Arts/English and Math. Three units are required in the core subjects of Science and Social Sciences, and two units are required in any two of the same foreign language classes, totaling 16 units. For a technical career diploma, the student must possess three units in each core subject of Science, Social Sciences, and Math. Four units are also required for Language Arts/English, totaling 13 units.
Once awarded the Georgia Hope Scholarship, it is necessary to adhere to requirements in order to keep the scholarship. In order to keep the scholarship, the student must enroll into a college that is recognized by the scholarship foundation. This includes any Universities, Technical Colleges, Adult Education Colleges, or other recognized privately operating universities and colleges in the state of Georgia. For those attending public colleges and universities, there is no set number of hours you must attend classes or be enrolled in the educational facility.
However, students attending private schools do have requirements. As an example, if the student attends the college full time, they would receive the scholarship for up to $1,500 depending upon the payment schedule. For part-time, private school, students, they would be eligible for up to $750, depending upon the payment schedule.
Continued eligibility is also determined by academic performance. All recipients of the Georgia Hope Scholarship must maintain a GPA of a minimum of 3.0 at the conclusion of each spring semester. Those failing to maintain this grade point average will have the opportunity to reapply for the scholarship. However, certain requirements will have to be met.
