Hispanic Scholarships
Hispanics comprise one of the largest minority populations in the United States, even to outnumbering African Americans by most accounts. This is of little surprise considering the United States' cultural roots and history - Spanish people and nations have figured prominently in North American history since the beginning. For the purposes of Hispanic Scholarships, a person is considered Hispanic if they hail from a range of Spanish-speaking countries, such as Mexico, Peru, Cuba, and Colombia. Like most minority groups, Hispanics have been relegated to lower income positions and many have grasped at the first available low-paying service job they can find.
As Hispanics have settled into urban communities where others like them live, language has given them a common bond, but often contributes to the barriers that keep them locked out of the professional world. For young men and women of Hispanic heritage in secondary schools, barriers such as language and income level are continuing to create community discrimination professionally, economically, and socially.
Such hurdles are often difficult for Hispanics to overcome, especially when it comes to college education. Many first-generation Hispanic-Americans have not reached a plateau where they feel as eligible as their African or Black American counterparts in pursuing a college education. Scholarship programs for Hispanics are meant to address that specific need.
Opportunities exist, such as the Stanford Society of Chicano/Latino Engineers and Scientists, which provides scholarships for Hispanic students focused on engineering. Programs like these are intended to diversify professional fields traditionally dominated by white males. Over time, it is hoped that these opportunities send a clear message to Hispanic youth that pushes for their integration and participation in business and other professional fields.
Another such organization is the Hispanic Scholarship Fund Institute, which was created in 2001 to extend the impact of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund on the achievement of Latinos in the United States. Working with the fund with the goal of doubling the rate of Hispanic college graduates by the year 2010, the primary focus of the Institute is to engage the public sector in support of Latino higher education achievement.
As Hispanics are the fastest-growing segment of the US workforce, increasing college graduation rates among Hispanics will lead to better paying jobs for more individuals, families, and communities. Hispanic scholarship funds point out that this will produce a sizable increase in tax revenues and needed support for Social Security and Medicare, besides helping to fuel the country's future economic growth. The figures indicate that doubling the rate at which Hispanics earn college degrees from even 9% to 18% by the year 2010 would yield $7.6 billion in increased tax revenue over the lifetime of the students and generate at least $14 billion in disposable income for savings, investment, and economic stimulus.
