Native American Scholarships
It took awhile for the blue-eyed people from the East to get it right. The country they set up had to stumble through a century or two of struggle and strife before it finally got the idea that freedom and opportunity were for everybody, not just for people of a certain race or gender. It is ironic that the native inhabitants of this continent had to wait until almost the last in line before they got an equal chance to share in the thing called "the American Dream". But the country finally learned, and now opportunities are opening up, including for Native American scholarships.
One organization helping Native American scholarships become a reality is known as Catching The Dream (CTD). Previously known as the Native American Scholarship Fund, Catching the Dream was chartered in 1986 to help provide Indian tribes, Indian communities and tribal organizations with professionally trained and educated Native Americans through providing Native American scholarships. Their focus is to raise funds to provide for high-achieving American Indians in the fields critical to the economic, political, social, educational, environmental, and business development of Indian communities.
To supplement the focus on Native American scholarships, CTD has programs to help Indian students prepare for college-level studies and to improve the educational resources and programs that prepare these students for college.
A federal grant program is also active, which is the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) which also makes Native American scholarships available. Many Indian tribes also maintain their own scholarship and educational funds. Students should first try these proximate sources, as there are many sources worth exploring for Native American scholarships, although the awards are usually for small amounts. Very often if a student does not qualify for a federal grant, the tribe will award a "tribal" scholarship. Each tribe handles its own Native American scholarships funding differently however, so it's best to check with the individual tribe.
Many schools offer free tuition, room and board to Native American students, especially full-blooded Native Americans, making this a kind of automatic form of Native American scholarships. Be sure to ask each school you are considering what incentives they offer to encourage Native American students to enroll, and also check if there are special awards for students minoring in Native American studies. For example, Native American students who attend any state school in Montana will qualify for Native American scholarships if they are Montana residents, have at least one-quarter Indian blood, and can demonstrate financial need. The award includes tuition and administrative fees.
