NROTC Scholarship
If you don't know, hit the deck and give me twenty! Ha, OK, it's kind of hard to read the monitor while you're doing push-ups, so I guess we'll let you off this time. Just wanted you to feel at home. But monitoring your NROTC scholarship status will be the point of this essay, and then you'll know.
The purpose of the NROTC program is to train college students for leadership roles as commissioned officers in the Navy and Marine Corps. The plan usually covers tuition, educational fees, uniforms, a subsistence allowance, textbook stipend, and transportation costs such as from home to school and from school to summer cruise training. Soooo, some frequently-wondered-about matters pertaining to NROTC scholarship status:
NROTC scholarship status is not a factor in determining your assignment after graduation. Wherever they need a warm body stationed when you are up, that's where you go, regardless of your educational background.
The earlier you apply, the earlier you can improve your NROTC scholarship status. The Marine Corps holds two scholarship selection boards each year, one in November, and one in February. The Navy conducts a continuous selection process from September through March. Knowing your NROTC scholarship status in the Fall can be a big advantage in helping you to make decisions about which universities you can afford and to which you should apply.
The scholarship selection board is made up of different groups of NROTC Unit Commanding Officers who meet bi-weekly from October through March. Hence, you could be awarded a scholarship anytime from November through April. So you have to keep checking back on it to be updated of your NROTC scholarship status.
If you miss the January first deadline, you can still become eligible for the award of a scholarship by joining the NROTC unit in the College Program (non-scholarship) status. After one academic term, in which your academic performance and aptitude can be assessed, you can be recommended for NROTC scholarship status to the Chief of Naval Education and Training, who is empowered to award scholarships to promising College Program students. The requirements for this aren't too picky: keep a GPA of 2.5 or better, score a "B" or better in calculus, and demonstrate a high aptitude for Naval Service, and your NROTC scholarship status should improve considerably.
You do not have to wait for the results of the NROTC scholarship selection before applying for admission at your University. Since you may not know your NROTC scholarship status until after the University's deadline, Universities are understanding of the process and will make some allowances for NROTC scholarship students.
