Nursing Scholarships
Right off, let's dispose with a silly stigma. Nursing is a highly regarded and highly valuable profession. A nurse is not someone who tried to be a doctor and couldn't make it. Nursing is a career goal in and of itself. Nurses are just as valuable to the process of medical care as doctors themselves, and in some cases can make or break the patient's treatment. Finally, Real Men, as well as Real Women, can nurse and can find a nursing scholarship.
Here in the USA, with the growing need for health care as the Baby Boomer population ages, it's no surprise that there is a nursing shortage that is expected to intensify. Compounding the problem is the fact that nursing colleges and universities are struggling to expand enrollment levels to meet the rising demand for nursing care in the medical industry. Various nursing educational groups such as the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and the American Nurses Association (ANA) are working to meet the nursing shortage by working with schools, policy makers, kindred organizations, and the media to bring attention to this health care crisis and hopefully encourage students to take advantage of a nursing scholarship.
There are many nursing scholarships and grants available, covering the range from federal grants to private funding. There are many kinds of nursing scholarships; there are scholarships offered by schools of nursing, scholarships funded by agencies with specific criteria, and by trusts, corporations, and individuals.
The criteria for eligibility for a nursing scholarship vary from one college to another, but none of them are too stiff. Applicants must be seeking admission to the first year or advanced studies in nursing. To qualify, you have to have a minimum GPA of 3.0, be dedicated to nursing, and have a professional attitude. Requirements would include college transcripts, letters of recommendation, or an essay stating why the student chose nursing as a profession. Of course, you need evidence of citizenship, and some proof of financial need is usually required as well.
The US Department of Health and Human Services has instituted a nursing scholarship program which is similar in nature to an internship. In exchange for two years of service the scholarship awards tuition, fees, and other expenses like books, clinical supplies, and laboratory expenses. Some programs even include a monthly stipend along with the nursing scholarship for additional support as you work and learn your way through the program.
Nursing is a rewarding career field; it has great job security and benefits, and you get to take care of people while leaving the heavy, gruesome details to the doctor. Nursing covers a broad range of specialties as well, from the almost clerical duties of a medical assistant to the more involved duties of a maternity nurse assisting with birthing and post-natal care.
