Scholarships While Studying Abroad
Travel broadens the mind. Education strengthens the mind. Put the two together, and you have a college education gained abroad, which, for any American or a citizen of any industrialized country, is a staggering opportunity, and one not often considered.
This is based on a concept called "brain drain". This is a term for what happens when the country suffers an education deficit. Sometimes that happens when countries have a sudden shift in politics or economy and the educated leave. An example is World War 2 Germany - when Hitler came to power, the scientists fled in droves. Brain drain is how the United States ended up with Albert Einstein - enough said! Other kinds of brain drain are cases where a country, for various complicated reasons, simply fails to attract enough academically-proficient citizens, or their system doesn't encourage the growth of education to match their population.
The global marketplace has created fierce competition for educated citizens between nations. Many countries award scholarships simply for the asking to anyone who moves there, with the sole condition that they remain a citizen of that country. Nations of the world have awoken to the fact that the more educated their citizens, the more their Gross National Product will be boosted. Developing countries have especially jumped at the chance to get themselves a slice of the technology market. The nations within Asia, eastern Europe, and Africa have all spoken up in the past decade: they know that technology-based industry is an open market with little barrier to entry except know-how.
For those looking to gain an advantage in a field of study related to a foreign country already, scholarships abroad present a doubly enticing opportunity. Zoologists and horticulturists frequent devote most of their career to one particular regional area, for instance. If you were already out to map the ecology of the Amazon rain forest, a scholarship hosted in a South American country would fill you right in. Or perhaps your interest is archaeology; in which case, searching in the part of the world where your field of study lies buried may reward you with the scholarship that is your gateway to fame.
A more well-known example is the famous and prestigious Fulbright Scholarship program. More alumni of the Fulbright program have been the recipients of Nobel Prizes than those of any other academic program, including two in 2002. The Fulbright Program provides funding for scholars, students, and professionals to undertake graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools while abroad. The early stages of this program had been mostly European countries, but now the program operates worldwide.
