Scholarships for Minorities
"Anything can Happen" is a book by George Papashvili, which is a classic story of an immigrant adjusting to life in the United States. In it's pages is captured the struggles and victories of an immigrant from the Republic of Georgia, a small country in Asia Minor. It is just one of many stories that minorities in America can share and identify with, whether they were born native or not. It is heartening to know that the American dream shows best it's fulfillment in the helping hand to minorities seeking an education and eventual success in life.
Lest we forget, minorities in the United States include the native natives - several scholarship plans exist for American Indians. The foundations offering opportunities to Native Americans include the American Indian College Fund, the American Indian Graduate Center, and the American Indian Science and Engineering Society. Various other minority scholarship programs include Federally recognized Indian bloodlines in their definition of minorities.
Many scholarships for minorities programs are also addressed to those less advantaged in our inner cities. These are for people of black or Hispanic race who are United States residents. They have the widest array of opportunities, as virtually any organization awarding college funding to minorities includes inner-city minority citizens in consideration. These organizations deserve special attention; while many in America pay lip service to our failing education levels, these people are doing something about it. Those who grow up in our inner cities can well appreciate having an organization which reaches out to them and accepts and understands them and their special needs.
Women are also honored as minorities with an array of scholarship offers. There is the Association for Women in Communications, the National Women's Technical Scholarship, the CalTech Fellowships for Women, and the National Physical Science Consortium, amongst many others. One might ask, "How exactly is half of the human race considered a minority?" True, women aren't a minority in the general sense, but in certain fields such as science and technology, women are very scarce indeed - just ask any programmer! Yet history shows us that women have very valid skills to contribute. Ada Lovelace was the first programmer, working with Charles Babbage on the Difference Engine. Marie Curie was a Polish-French physicist and chemist, who pioneered in the early field of radiology to later becoming the first two-time Nobel laureate and the only person with Nobel Prizes in two different fields of science. Scholarships for women in the sciences ensure that we do not lose our future Lovelace and Curie to financial discouragement.
Lastly, there are the minorities who migrate to the United States from other countries, seeking that fabled land of opportunity. All of these are easy enough to find online. The beauty of scholarships for minorities is that no matter who you are or what race you call your own, someone of your background has gone before you, made their mark in the world, and then reached back with a scholarship fund for minorities of their own kin, to both inspire future generations and make the way easier for those to come.
