Scholarships for Women
When it comes to Federal grants and awards for scholarships, women are often ranked with the minorities. When the population is actually tilted towards women due to a slightly higher life expectancy, how is this possible? The intended meaning is, that men outnumber women in the job force - in some fields by a factor of ten or even a hundred to one!
This is caused by a number of social factors. American society is still largely patriarchal; and thus it will remain until we elect a woman president or have a woman be CEO of the world's largest corporation. It is a shame that this is so; we cannot imagine what kind of a different world we could have, if we still choose not to give half the human race a fighting chance. Perhaps we would enjoy more peace and prosperity. Perhaps new discoveries are waiting in science, which will remain hidden until they are teased out by a woman's point of view. Perhaps technology would be more inviting to women if more women designed it. The more women take advantage of scholarships, the closer we will come to finding out.
Of course, women have historically chosen sometimes to exclude themselves from the job force temporarily to make time for family responsibilities. When they are ready to go back to work, they may find themselves out of the loop for too long, and need to catch up. Many scholarship programs address that need, by giving women an easier step up to renewing their career ambitions.
Many private organizations and groups sponsor their own scholarship programs. Being a private group, however, the criteria for awarding a scholarship may depend on membership or affiliation with a certain group or category. It may be beneficial for women to focus their scholarship search less on their sex than on their race, economic situation, or field of interest. The great majority of scholarships are open to either sex.
There are of course universities with an affiliated public scholarship program for women. These are more likely to be passionately focused on the cause of getting more career opportunities for women, as they are more keenly aware of the scarcity of women in some fields. In some cases, women will get partial tuition coverage where men would pay full price. As with any scholarship, women too are expected to pledge a certain amount of their professional time to a cause or field for which the scholarship was granted; for instance, they may be required to do two years of work in a particular field of study or pledge a number of hours to community service in that field.
Online searches for these kinds of scholarships are easy to come across. And of all the unclaimed scholarships out there, the ones for women are the most likely to go unclaimed! This should be a more powerful motivator to get women to search, because they are more likely to find something they can use. Hopefully, awareness of scholarships for women will spread, so that we can finally enjoy more professional input from all aspects of society.
