Scholarships Students With Disabilities
Scholarships For Students with Disabilities I once worked with a professional handicapped person while working at a public hospital. This person was mostly paralyzed down to his legs; the rest of his body had poor muscle control and he could not speak, only grunt. When I met him, he drove a motorized wheelchair with his feet; moreover, he had a computer keyboard mounted on the front of the chair with which he could type with his feet and carry on conversations through a voice synthesizer. While he was a patient of the hospital, he was also employed there designing software for those handicapped like himself. Thanks to shortcut keys and a wireless link with computers, he essentially ran a whole technology center within the hospital. To look at him, you wouldn't know that he wasn't retarded; but if you had the patience to talk to him (OK, you try typing with your feet and see how you do!), you'd find out he was a fantastically intelligent person. He was one of the first programmers that I knew personally, and still leaves an impression on me to this day of what we can achieve if given the proper tools. And he would be proud of what scholarship students with disabilities can achieve today. Even fully-enabled college students across the board generally need to borrow from a plethora of financial sources in order to complete a college education; every year they use federal grants and loans, state-based grants and scholarships, college and university grants, private and professional organization's fellowships and scholarships, and private loans from lending institutions. Scholarship students with disabilities face all of the above in addition to their handicaps. Scholarship students with disabilities will not only be encumbered with the same funding issues in finding opportunities for scholarships, but they will also face challenges within a traditional collegiate environment; not the least of which is accessibility and mobility. The accessibility issue was, for a change, well-handled with the signing into law in 1975 of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), hopefully not delayed too long while they were picking the cute acronym. The IDEA was recently amended in 2004 and has reshaped the way our educational system deals with those with special education needs, making it easier to have scholarship students with disabilities. Scholarship students with disabilities are at an advantage when it comes to public grants and scholarships. Since the IDEA made it illegal to segregate disabled students, there has been a concentrated effort to offer incentives for students with disabilities to pursue their educational and career goals. Many organizations are available to offer outstanding support, including the National Federation for the Blind and the National Association of the Deaf. Thanks to increased cultural awareness in our modern global economy, colleges and universities know that their campus environments are more fulfilling academically, intellectually and socially when they provide a diverse student body. As a means to those ends, colleges have not only ramped up grants and scholarships to underrepresented populations, but they solicit and invite scholarship students with disabilities to join their communities. Not only do grants pay for individual students tuition, but pay for the technological support that enables disabled students to participate in college society as well, like with my old hospital friend. Government grants also provide many institutions with the funds to cover the cost of cutting-edge captioning equipment for scholarship students with disabilities. There are even some universities that are implementing videoconferencing capabilities or virtual classrooms to engage students with disabilities. Article Snippet Click to Read Complete Article
