Unclaimed Scholarships The information age has made more information accessible, and faster, than ever before, but unfortunately doesn't equip us to differentiate the true information from the bogus myth. Hence, the need to blunt the effect of modern mythology with sites like truthorfiction.com and snopes.com. And unclaimed scholarships get their share of claimants. The usual picture is presented of thousands of dollars being shoveled out of a government wheelbarrow to anybody who gets in line. You've probably seen the TV commercial with Mark Lesko, that hyper guy running around in a costume that's a perfect blend of Two-Face and the Riddler, while he hawks his book. Unclaimed scholarships do exist, and many are just a matter of not enough people knowing about them, but not nearly as much as what is hyped. There is truth in the legend of unclaimed scholarships, however, and it can be uncovered with a little bit of digging. The way to see it, is that you are only concerned with the scholarships left unclaimed by you. If you don't get them, somebody else probably will. The key is to know what's out there. There are public scholarships. In a typical year, over two billion dollars of public scholarship awards will be awarded to students in the United States. This money is awarded by organizations ranging from businesses to colleges to civic groups. A public scholarship is one which doesn't require any type of prior membership in order to qualify. For instance, the Target All-Around Scholarships, sponsored by the Target department store chain, are open to any students wishing to apply who have a commitment to community service. No prior memberships, such as employment at Target, are required to apply. Rest assured that public scholarships have applicants every year, until all the money is awarded. The competition for these is sometimes even hectic, but if you don't search for these in the first place, you'll never know about them and the money will go unclaimed... by you! Private scholarships are actually where the bulk of the unclaimed money is each year. Private awards for scholarships are those that are based on group affiliations. That can mean membership in an organization, but remember that if you belong to a specific minority such as being of a minority race or being left-handed or being fascinated with mycology, you qualify as being affiliated with that category. Take Wal-Mart's Higher REACH Scholarships for example. These are open to company employees only; while Wal-Mart employs millions, only a few thousand scholarships are awarded. The odds when there are prior affiliation requirements are that much of that money may be awarded as well. If you are fortunate enough to have a private affiliation that would qualify you for such a scholarship, the key is to make sure you know about it. Online searches are not only a good first step, but absolutely necessary. Always look for a site that performs searches based on what you want to do, as well as your affiliations. An even more important feature is that they also help you search based on those minute criteria that could qualify you for those rare scholarships that may go partially unclaimed due to having fewer applicants. Search carefully for every interest that you have and every business or club you have belonged to. The world of scholarships is a very competitive environment; sometimes you will even find it a zero-sum game with winners and losers. But by looking for those scholarships that may have fewer applicants, you increase your chances of being that winner who claimed an unclaimed scholarship... before someone else did.
